### **How many characters can a Mastodon post have?**

By default, Mastodon posts can contain up to **500 characters**. However, this limit can vary depending on your server's settings, as Mastodon instance administrators can configure different character limits for their servers.

### **How do URLs count towards the Mastodon character limit?**

**URLs in Mastodon posts are counted as 23 characters**, regardless of their actual length. That means there is no reason to use a link shortener with Mastodon posts.

### **Do mentions count towards the Mastodon character limit?**

Yes, mentions count towards your character limit, but only the username portion is counted. The domain part after the @ symbol does not count towards the limit. For example, in "@user@mastodon.social", only "@user" would count towards your character limit, not "@mastodon.social."

### **What counts as one character in a Mastodon post?**

The following elements each count as one character:

- Letters, numbers, and special characters
- Spaces
- Punctuation marks
- Emoji (may count as more than one character)
- The @ symbol and full domain in mentions
- URLs (counted as 23 characters)

### **Do images count towards the Mastodon character limit?**

No, images do not count toward the character limit. You can add images to your post without affecting your character count.

### **What happens if I exceed the character limit on Mastodon?**

Mastodon won't allow you to post content that exceeds your server's character limit. This free Mastodon character counter tool from Postpone helps you check your character count to ensure your posts meet your server's requirements.
