# Verification / Blue Check

Verification is a badge on a social media profile confirming the account's identity, typically shown as a blue check next to the username.

Verification used to mean one thing: this account is who it claims to be. A blue checkmark told you the account belonged to the real person or brand, confirmed by the platform. That meaning is no longer universal.

## The Old Model vs. the New

Before 2023, blue checks on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook were free but selective. Platforms verified public figures, journalists, brands, and notable accounts. The badge meant "we confirmed this identity." You couldn't buy it.

Twitter/X changed everything. Under Elon Musk, verification became a paid subscription. Anyone could get a blue check. This shifted the badge from "identity confirmed" to "paying subscriber." X also gives verified accounts algorithmic boosts — their replies rank higher and their posts get more distribution.

Meta followed with Meta Verified for Instagram and Facebook, offering the badge plus account support and impersonation protection. Both X and Meta have adjusted pricing and tiers over time, so check each platform for current rates. TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn still use the traditional model where verification is earned or applied for.

## What Verification Gets You

The benefits vary by platform:

- **X/Twitter**: Blue check, reply priority, longer posts, edit button, reduced ads
- **Instagram/Facebook (Meta Verified)**: Blue badge, proactive impersonation monitoring, direct account support
- **YouTube**: Gray checkmark for channels with 100,000+ subscribers
- **LinkedIn**: Identity verification through third-party services, free
- **TikTok**: Blue badge for notable accounts, applied through a request process

## Should You Pay for Verification?

For business accounts on X, the algorithmic boost alone often justifies the cost. Your posts reach more people, your replies get seen first, and your profile looks more legitimate to potential customers.

On Instagram, Meta Verified is more about customer support access and impersonation protection than visibility. If your brand faces impersonation issues or you've struggled to reach a human at Meta, it's worth considering.

For personal brands, verification adds credibility regardless of platform. People still associate the blue check with authority, even though the meaning has shifted.

**Example**

After subscribing to X Premium, your brand account gets a blue checkmark. Your replies now appear higher in threads, and your posts get a visibility boost in the algorithm — a practical trade-off between subscription cost and increased distribution.

## **Why It Matters**

Verification affects trust, visibility, and algorithmic treatment. On platforms where verification is paid, it's a practical business decision — the algorithmic benefits can outweigh the subscription cost. On platforms where it's earned, it's a credibility signal that's hard to replicate.
