# Vanity Metrics

Vanity metrics are numbers that look good on the surface but do not correlate with meaningful business results.

Vanity metrics are the stats that make you feel good but don't help you make better decisions. They're easy to grow, impressive to screenshot, and mostly meaningless without context.

## Common Vanity Metrics

- **Follower count** — 100,000 followers means nothing if only 200 people see your posts
- **Likes** — A like takes zero effort and rarely leads to action
- **Page views** — Traffic that bounces immediately has no value
- **Total impressions** — Being shown to people who ignore you isn't an achievement
- **Video views** — Most platforms count a "view" after just 1-3 seconds of watch time

None of these metrics are inherently useless. The problem is treating them as goals instead of using them as supporting data for metrics that actually drive outcomes.

## Vanity vs. Actionable Metrics

The same number can be vanity or actionable depending on how you use it.

Follower count alone is vanity. **Follower growth rate** paired with engagement rate is actionable — it tells you whether your audience is growing with the right people.

Impressions alone are vanity. **Impressions-to-engagement ratio** is actionable — it tells you how effectively your content captures attention.

Video views alone are vanity. **Average watch time** and **completion rate** are actionable — they tell you whether people actually watched your content.

The difference is context. A vanity metric sits in isolation looking pretty. An actionable metric connects to a decision you can make.

## Why Vanity Metrics Persist

Social media platforms surface vanity metrics by default because big numbers feel rewarding. Your Instagram profile prominently displays follower count. YouTube shows total views. TikTok shows likes.

These numbers are designed to keep you posting. They're not designed to help you run a business.

There's also social pressure. Clients, bosses, and stakeholders who don't understand social media marketing fixate on follower counts and view totals. It's easier to report "we gained 5,000 followers this month" than to explain why your 800 email signups from LinkedIn matter more.

## What to Track Instead

Replace vanity metrics with numbers tied to business outcomes:

- **Engagement rate** instead of total likes
- **Click-through rate** instead of total impressions
- **Conversion rate** instead of total traffic
- **Revenue attributed to social** instead of follower count
- **Cost per lead** instead of total reach

The best metric is the one that helps you decide what to do next. If a number doesn't change your behavior, it's vanity.

**Example**

Your TikTok video hits 500,000 views but drives zero website visits and no sales. The view count feels great but didn't move the needle for your business — that's a vanity metric in action.

## **Why It Matters**

Chasing vanity metrics wastes time and budget. Teams that focus on follower counts and likes instead of conversions and revenue often look successful on social while their business stagnates. Knowing which metrics are vanity helps you focus on what actually matters.
