# Trending

Trending is the state of a topic, hashtag or piece of content that is surging in popularity and visibility on a platform right now.

Trending means a topic is experiencing a surge of attention right now. Every major platform has some version of a trending section — a curated or algorithmic list of what people are currently talking about, searching for, or engaging with at higher-than-normal rates.

On Twitter/X, trending topics appear in the Explore tab and sidebar, ranked by volume and velocity. TikTok surfaces trending sounds, effects, and hashtags on the Discover page. YouTube shows trending videos nationally. Reddit's r/popular and r/all function as trending feeds. Instagram's Explore page highlights trending content, though it doesn't label it as explicitly.

## How Trending Works

Platforms detect trends using engagement velocity — how quickly a topic is gaining activity compared to its baseline. A hashtag that normally gets 500 mentions per hour suddenly hitting 50,000 triggers the trending algorithm. The platform promotes it, which creates a feedback loop: more visibility drives more engagement, which drives more visibility.

Trending topics typically fall into a few categories:

- **Breaking news** — events, announcements, emergencies
- **Cultural moments** — award shows, game releases, celebrity drama
- **Memes and challenges** — viral formats that everyone riffs on simultaneously
- **Seasonal events** — holidays, product launches, sports events

The lifespan of a trend varies. Breaking news can trend for days. A meme format might trend for six hours before burning out. Most trends peak and fade within 24 hours.

## Trending as a Content Strategy

Newsjacking — creating content around a trending topic to ride the wave — is one of the fastest ways to expand reach. But timing is everything. If you're posting about a trend that peaked yesterday, you're late. The audience has moved on.

The brands that capitalize on trends successfully have short approval chains. They empower their social teams to post in real-time without waiting for three rounds of legal review. Speed matters more than polish when the window is measured in hours.

Not every trend is worth joining. Jumping on a trending tragedy with a product plug is a PR disaster. Know the context before you post. Read the room, read the thread, then decide if your brand has something genuinely useful or entertaining to add.

**Example**

A major product launches and the brand's hashtag trends on Twitter for 14 hours. Brands that jump in with relevant content during those hours see a significant spike in impressions. Brands that post about it two days later get nothing.

## **Why It Matters**

Trending topics are real-time distribution windows. Posting relevant content while a topic trends gives you access to audiences you'd never reach organically. Missing the window means missing the traffic entirely — trending is time-sensitive by definition.
