**Platform Concepts**

# Thread

A thread is a series of connected posts published in sequence by the same author to share an idea longer than a single post allows.

Threads are how you go deep on platforms built for brevity. Instead of cramming your idea into one tweet or post, you break it across multiple connected entries that people read sequentially.

## Threads on Twitter/X

Twitter threads became a content format of their own around 2017-2018. Writers, founders, and marketers discovered that a well-structured thread could go viral in ways individual tweets rarely did.

The format is simple: write your first tweet, then reply to it with each subsequent part. Twitter groups them together so readers can scroll through the full thread seamlessly.

What makes threads work on Twitter is the hook. Your first tweet needs to stop the scroll — it's the headline for the entire piece. Common hooks include bold claims ("I spent $50,000 on Facebook ads last year. Here's everything I learned."), specific numbers, or contrarian takes.

Strong threads follow a pattern: **hook → context → substance → takeaway**. Each individual tweet should make sense on its own while building toward the larger point. Readers drop off at every tweet boundary, so keep each part compelling.

## Threads on Threads (Meta)

Meta's Threads app borrows the name but uses threads differently. On Threads, any post can become a thread by adding subsequent posts. The culture is more conversational — long-form educational threads haven't taken off the same way they did on Twitter. The platform currently favors shorter, punchier content.

## Thread Strategy

**Length matters.** The sweet spot on Twitter is 5-15 tweets. Shorter than 5 doesn't justify the format. Longer than 15 loses most readers.

**End with a CTA.** Ask for a follow, a retweet, or direct people to a resource. Threads build goodwill — capitalize on it while attention is high.

**Pin your best thread.** A high-performing thread pinned to the top of your profile serves as a portfolio piece. New visitors see your best thinking first.

**Repurpose aggressively.** A good thread can become a blog post, LinkedIn article, newsletter issue, or carousel. You've already done the hard work of structuring the ideas.

**Example**

A marketing consultant writes a 10-tweet thread on Twitter/X breaking down how a D2C brand grew from $0 to $5M using only organic social. The thread gets 2,400 retweets and 15,000 likes — far more engagement than any single tweet could generate.

## **Why It Matters**

Threads let you share in-depth content on platforms designed for short posts. A strong thread builds authority, generates saves and shares, and can drive more engagement than weeks of standalone posts combined.
