# Social Media Strategy

A social media strategy is your plan for what to post, where, when and why, tied to specific goals and measurable outcomes.

Posting without a plan is easy. Posting with purpose is what actually moves numbers.

A social media strategy lays out your goals, your audience, where you'll show up, what you'll post, and how you'll know it's working. It's not a static document you write once and forget. It's a living framework you revisit regularly as your business and platforms evolve.

## What Goes Into One

Every solid strategy answers five questions:

- **Why are you on social media?** Brand awareness, lead generation, community building, customer support — pick your priorities. Trying to do everything at once means you'll do nothing well.
- **Who are you talking to?** Get specific. "Millennials who like fitness" isn't a target audience. "29-year-old women who run half marathons and buy gear on Instagram" is.
- **Where will you show up?** You don't need to be on every platform. Pick 2-4 where your audience already spends time. A B2B SaaS company doesn't need a TikTok presence if their buyers live on LinkedIn.
- **What will you post?** Define 3-5 content pillars — recurring themes that tie back to your goals. A meal kit company might use: recipes, behind-the-scenes, customer stories, nutrition tips, and seasonal promos.
- **How will you measure success?** Choose KPIs that match your goals. If you care about awareness, track reach and impressions. If you care about revenue, track click-through rate and conversions.

## Common Mistakes

The biggest one: copying what competitors do without understanding why they do it. Their audience isn't your audience. Their goals aren't your goals.

Second: setting goals that are too vague. "Grow our Instagram" isn't a goal. "Increase Instagram engagement rate from 2.1% to 3.5% by Q3" is.

Third: ignoring platform differences. The same post won't perform equally on Reddit, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Each platform has its own culture, format preferences, and algorithm behavior. Your strategy should account for that.

## Keeping It Alive

Review performance monthly. What content types are working? Which platforms are driving results? Double down on what's performing and cut what isn't. Quarterly, zoom out and reassess your goals. Markets shift. Audiences shift. Your strategy should shift with them.

The best strategies are simple enough to execute consistently and flexible enough to adapt when the data tells you to pivot.

**Example**

A DTC skincare brand decides to focus on Instagram Reels and TikTok for awareness, LinkedIn for B2B partnerships, and Reddit for community feedback. They post 4x/week per channel, track engagement rate and website clicks monthly, and adjust content pillars quarterly.

## **Why It Matters**

Without a strategy, you're just posting and hoping. A clear plan keeps your content focused, your team aligned, and your results measurable. It's the difference between growing intentionally and spinning your wheels.
