# Social Media Etiquette

Social media etiquette is the set of written and unwritten rules for polite, respectful behavior on social platforms.

Every platform has its own unspoken rules, and breaking them costs you credibility faster than almost any other mistake. What flies on Twitter/X will get you roasted on LinkedIn. What works on Reddit will feel forced on Instagram. Social media etiquette isn't one universal code — it's a set of norms that shift by platform, community, and context.

## The Universal Rules

Some things translate everywhere. Don't hijack someone else's post to promote yourself. Don't argue in bad faith. Credit people when you use their ideas or content. Don't send unsolicited pitches in DMs without context. Don't tag people in content that has nothing to do with them. Respond to genuine questions. Say thank you when someone helps you.

These seem obvious, but brands violate them constantly. Automated responses that miss the point. Generic "great post!" comments designed purely for visibility. Jumping into trending conversations with tone-deaf promotional angles. Each one chips away at how people perceive you.

## Platform-Specific Norms

**Reddit** has the strictest etiquette culture. Read the subreddit rules before posting. Don't self-promote without contributing value first. Redditors will check your post history — if it's all links to your own site, you'll get downvoted or banned.

**LinkedIn** expects professionalism, but the definition is shifting. Personal stories perform well now, but humblebrags and "I'm thrilled to announce" posts draw eye rolls. Be genuine or be quiet.

**Twitter/X** is more casual, but quote-tweeting someone just to dunk on them or ratio them is considered aggressive by many users, even if it's common.

**Instagram** etiquette is visual-first. Don't post low-effort content and expect engagement. Don't leave bot-style comments on other people's posts. Don't use 30 irrelevant hashtags.

**TikTok** rewards authenticity. Overly polished, corporate-feeling content violates the platform's unspoken norm of being real and unfiltered.

## For Brands

The safest rule: behave online the way you'd behave at a professional event where everyone has a camera. Be friendly, be helpful, be genuine. Don't say anything you wouldn't want screenshotted and shared. That last part isn't hypothetical — it will happen eventually, and etiquette is what determines whether the screenshot makes you look good or terrible.

**Example**

A new employee manages the company LinkedIn and replies to a critical comment with a sarcastic clapback. It screenshots well and goes semi-viral — but for all the wrong reasons. The CEO spends the next week doing damage control. A simple, professional response would have ended the conversation in minutes.

## **Why It Matters**

Poor etiquette burns bridges publicly and permanently. Screenshots last forever, and one tone-deaf reply can undo months of brand building. Understanding platform norms protects your reputation and keeps your community healthy.
