# Social Media Audit

A social media audit is a systematic review of all your social accounts to assess what is working, what is not and what to change.

Think of an audit as a health check for your social media presence. You're looking at every account you manage — active or dormant — and answering one question: is this working?

Most teams skip this entirely. They keep posting, keep creating, and never step back to look at the full picture. That's how you end up maintaining six platforms when only two are driving results.

## What to Review

A thorough audit covers several areas:

- **Account inventory.** List every account your brand or you personally have. Include old accounts, test accounts, and platforms you forgot about. You'd be surprised how often there's a forgotten Twitter account from 2018 still floating around with your brand name.
- **Profile completeness.** Check bios, profile photos, links, and handles across platforms. Are they consistent? Is the link in your Instagram bio still pointing to last year's campaign landing page?
- **Content performance.** Pull your top-performing and worst-performing posts from the past 60-90 days. Look for patterns. Which formats get engagement? Which topics drive clicks? What consistently flops?
- **Audience data.** Who's actually following you? Check demographics, active hours, and growth trends. If your product targets 25-34-year-olds but your Instagram audience skews 45+, you have a targeting problem.
- **Posting frequency and timing.** How often are you posting on each platform? Are there gaps? Did engagement change when you increased or decreased frequency?

## How Often to Do One

Quarterly is ideal for active accounts. At minimum, twice a year. Do one immediately if you're taking over an existing account, starting a new strategy, or if performance suddenly drops.

## Turning Findings Into Action

An audit is only useful if you act on it. After reviewing the data, make three lists:

- **Keep doing** — content types, platforms, and tactics that are clearly working.
- **Stop doing** — anything consuming time without producing results. This might mean sunsetting a platform entirely.
- **Test next** — new ideas informed by what the data showed you. Maybe your audience engages most with how-to content but you've only posted two in the last quarter.

The goal isn't perfection. It's clarity. Once you know what's actually happening across your accounts, every decision after that gets easier.

**Example**

You pull data from your Instagram, LinkedIn, and Reddit accounts for the past 90 days. You discover Instagram Reels drive 3x more profile visits than static posts, your LinkedIn engagement dropped 40% after you stopped posting on Fridays, and two of your Reddit posts drove more website traffic than everything else combined.

## **Why It Matters**

Most people have no idea what's actually working on their accounts. An audit replaces guesswork with data, showing you exactly where to double down and what to stop doing. Even a basic audit can reveal quick wins you've been missing for months.
