# Social Media Ad Spend

Social media ad spend is the total budget allocated to paid advertising across social media platforms.

Ad spend is the money going out the door to social platforms in exchange for reach, clicks, and conversions. It sounds straightforward, but how you allocate, track, and evaluate that budget determines whether paid social grows your business or drains it.

## What Counts as Ad Spend

Every dollar paid directly to a platform for advertising. That includes campaign budgets in Meta Ads Manager, TikTok Ads, LinkedIn Campaign Manager, Pinterest Ads, YouTube Ads, Twitter/X Ads, and Reddit Ads. It also includes boosted posts — those come out of ad budget even though they start as organic content.

What it doesn't include: the cost of creating ad content, agency fees, tool subscriptions, or employee time managing campaigns. Those are marketing costs, but they're separate from ad spend. Confusing the two will distort your ROI calculations.

## How to Set a Budget

There's no universal formula. But there are starting points.

**Percentage of revenue** is the most common approach. B2C companies typically spend 5-10% of revenue on all marketing, with 25-40% of that going to paid social. A company making $500K/year might allocate $15,000-$20,000 annually to social ads.

**Test-first budgeting** works for companies new to paid social. Start with $500-$1,000/month on one or two platforms. Run campaigns for 2-4 weeks to gather data on cost per click, cost per acquisition, and return on ad spend. Then scale what works.

**Platform minimums** matter too. LinkedIn ads tend to have higher CPCs than other platforms. TikTok and Facebook tend to be cheaper for reach-based campaigns. Reddit can be surprisingly cost-effective for niche audiences.

## Tracking What Matters

Raw spend tells you nothing by itself. The metrics that make ad spend meaningful are:

**Return on ad spend (ROAS):** Revenue generated per dollar spent. A 4x ROAS means $4 back for every $1 invested. Most e-commerce brands target 3-5x.

**Cost per acquisition (CPA):** How much you spend to get one customer. If your CPA is $30 and your average order is $25, you're losing money on every sale.

**Cost per click (CPC):** Useful for comparing platform efficiency, but only meaningful when you also track what happens after the click.

Review these numbers weekly. Shift budget away from underperforming platforms and toward channels delivering real returns.

**Example**

A mid-size e-commerce brand allocates $8,000/month to social ads: $4,000 on Meta (Instagram and Facebook), $2,500 on TikTok, $1,000 on Pinterest, and $500 on Reddit promoted posts.

## **Why It Matters**

Without tracking ad spend against results, you can't tell which platforms or campaigns are actually profitable. Knowing your spend-to-revenue ratio for each channel is what separates strategic advertising from throwing money at feeds.
