# Short-Form Video

Short-form video is vertical video content, typically under 60 seconds, built for quick viewing on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

Short-form video is vertical video content — usually between 15 and 60 seconds — built for mobile-first consumption. TikTok popularized the format, and now every major platform has its own version: Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels, and even LinkedIn and Pinterest have added short video features.

## Why It Dominates

The format works because it matches how people actually use social media: quick, distracted, thumb-scrolling sessions. A 20-second video delivers a complete idea before someone's attention wanders. That's hard to do with a text post or static image.

Platforms are also heavily incentivizing short-form video. TikTok's entire experience is built around it. Instagram's algorithm gives Reels significantly more reach than photos or carousels. YouTube Shorts get surfaced to audiences far beyond your subscriber base. The algorithmic boost alone makes short-form video the most efficient way to reach new people.

## What Makes It Work

**The hook is everything.** You have about one second before someone swipes. The first frame needs to stop the scroll — a bold statement, unexpected visual, or text overlay that creates curiosity.

**Keep it tight.** Shorter usually outperforms longer. If you can make your point in 15 seconds, don't stretch it to 60. Watch time percentage matters more than total watch time for most algorithms.

**Native over polished.** Overproduced content often underperforms on short-form platforms. Audiences respond to content that feels authentic and human. A phone-shot video with good lighting beats a studio production that feels like an ad.

**Sound matters.** Trending audio can dramatically boost distribution on TikTok and Reels. Even if your content doesn't depend on sound, adding a popular track increases the chance of algorithmic pickup.

## Repurposing Across Platforms

One short-form video can live on multiple platforms with minor adjustments. Film once, export without watermarks, and post natively to each platform. The key is removing platform-specific watermarks — Instagram suppresses videos with the TikTok logo, and vice versa.

Adjust captions and hashtags per platform, but the video itself can often stay the same. This makes short-form video one of the most efficient content formats for cross-platform strategies.

**Example**

A restaurant films a 15-second clip of a chef plating a dish set to a trending sound. It takes 10 minutes to shoot and edit, gets 200,000 views on TikTok, and drives a wave of reservations — outperforming their entire month of static Instagram posts.

## **Why It Matters**

Short-form video is the highest-reach content format on social media right now. Every major platform is prioritizing it algorithmically, which means short videos get shown to far more people than photos, text posts, or long-form content. If you're not making short-form video, you're leaving reach on the table.
