# Shitposting

Shitposting is posting deliberately low-effort, absurd or ironic content for humor or to subvert expectations.

Shitposting is the art of posting garbage on purpose. Not bad content — deliberately absurd, low-effort, or aggressively ironic content designed to entertain, confuse, or both. It's the internet's version of deadpan comedy.

The term originated in forum culture and migrated to Reddit, Tumblr, and Twitter, where it became a legitimate content strategy. The key distinction: shitposting isn't lazy posting. It's intentionally unhinged posting that requires understanding your audience well enough to know what absurdity they'll celebrate.

## What Shitposting Looks Like

There's no single format. Shitposting takes whatever shape the poster feels like:

- **Surreal non-sequiturs** — a photo of a microwave with the caption "he knows what he did"
- **Ironic sincerity** — posting "I love Mondays" with no further context
- **Chaotic energy** — 15 posts in 30 minutes, each more unhinged than the last
- **Antihumor** — the joke is that there's no joke
- **Deep-fried memes** — images intentionally degraded with excessive filters and compression

On Reddit, subreddits like r/shitposting and r/okbuddyretard are dedicated to the form. On Twitter/X, shitposting accounts regularly outperform mainstream media accounts in engagement. Tumblr practically invented the modern shitpost.

## Brands and Shitposting

Here's where it gets interesting. The brands winning social media right now aren't the ones with the highest production budgets. They're the ones willing to post like a 19-year-old with no supervision.

Duolingo's TikTok is pure shitposting. Nutter Butter's unhinged cookie posts became a cultural moment in 2024. These work because they feel human in a sea of corporate polish.

But there's a razor-thin line between "brand that gets it" and "brand that's trying too hard." If your shitposting feels committee-approved, the audience will smell it instantly. The best brand shitposts come from social managers given genuine creative freedom — not from a brainstorm session with 12 stakeholders.

You can't half-commit. Either go full chaos or stick to polished content. The middle ground is cringe.

**Example**

A brand account tweets a single lowercase 'a' at 2 AM. It gets 50,000 likes because followers recognize it as peak shitposting energy. The next morning's polished product post gets 200.

## **Why It Matters**

Shitposting is how the internet signals authenticity. Audiences are tired of polished content, and well-timed absurdity cuts through the noise. Brands that shitpost effectively — like Wendy's and Duolingo — build cult followings.
