# Shadowban

A shadowban is when a platform silently restricts your account so your content stops appearing to others, without ever notifying you.

Shadowbanning is a platform's way of punishing accounts without telling them. Your posts still appear normal on your end. But nobody else can see them. It's the social media equivalent of talking into a disconnected phone.

## How Shadowbans Work

The mechanics vary by platform. On Reddit, a shadowbanned account's posts and comments are automatically hidden from everyone. Your profile page returns a 404 for other users. You can post all day and never get a single response.

Instagram uses a softer version, often called a "reach ban." Your posts stop appearing in hashtag feeds and Explore. Your content only reaches a fraction of your followers. Instagram doesn't acknowledge this publicly, but the pattern is well-documented by creators who've experienced sudden, significant reach drops.

TikTok shadowbans typically mean your videos stop appearing on the For You Page. You might still get views from followers, but algorithmic distribution drops to near zero.

Twitter/X can limit your account's visibility in search results and replies without notifying you. Your tweets won't show up in hashtag searches, and your replies might be hidden behind a "Show more replies" click.

## Common Triggers

- **Spammy behavior** — posting too frequently, mass-following/unfollowing, repetitive content
- **Automation abuse** — using bots for engagement, auto-commenting, or bulk actions
- **Community violations** — repeated rule-breaking, even minor ones
- **Sudden activity spikes** — a brand-new account posting 20 times in one day looks suspicious
- **Banned hashtags or links** — Instagram especially flags certain hashtags and domains

## How to Check and Recover

On Reddit, visit your profile in an incognito browser. If it shows nothing, you're shadowbanned. On Instagram, check if your posts appear under hashtags when viewed from a different account.

Recovery usually means stopping whatever triggered the ban and waiting. On Reddit, you can [appeal to the admins](https://www.postpone.app/blog/how-to-appeal-a-reddit-suspension) at reddit.com/appeals. On Instagram and TikTok, reduce posting frequency, remove flagged content, and wait 1-2 weeks. Prevention is easier than recovery — stay within platform guidelines and avoid anything that looks automated.

**Example**

You've been posting in r/marketing daily, but your last 10 posts have zero upvotes and zero comments. You check on a logged-out browser and can't find any of them. Reddit has shadowbanned your account — your posts are invisible to everyone except you.

## **Why It Matters**

Shadowbans are the most dangerous penalty because you don't know you've been hit. You keep posting, thinking your content just isn't resonating, when in reality nobody can see it. Regularly checking your visibility from a logged-out perspective is essential for any serious social media strategy.
