# Reels

Reels are short-form vertical videos on Instagram and Facebook, typically 15 to 90 seconds long, built for discovery through algorithmic feeds.

Reels launched on Instagram in 2020 as a direct response to TikTok. The format is the same: short vertical videos with music, text overlays, and effects. But Reels live inside Instagram's massive existing user base, which changes how they distribute.

## Why Reels Get More Reach

Instagram's algorithm treats Reels differently than feed posts or Stories. Reels are designed for discovery. When you post a static photo, it mostly reaches your followers. When you post a Reel, Instagram actively shows it to people who don't follow you — through the Reels tab, Explore, and suggested content in the home feed.

This means Reels are your best organic growth tool on Instagram. The algorithm evaluates watch time, replays, shares, and saves to decide how widely to push your Reel. A Reel that hooks viewers in the first second and keeps them watching will outperform one with a slow buildup, even if the underlying content is stronger.

## What Works

The first 1-2 seconds determine everything. Start with motion, a bold statement, or a visual surprise. If someone swipes past in the first second, the algorithm notices and limits distribution.

Trending audio helps. Instagram boosts Reels that use popular sounds, especially while those sounds are gaining momentum. Don't wait until a sound is everywhere — by then, it's declining.

Keep it short. While Instagram allows Reels up to 90 seconds, 15-30 second Reels consistently perform best. The algorithm favors videos that people watch all the way through, and completion rates drop sharply past 30 seconds.

## Reels vs. TikTok

The content style is nearly identical, and many creators post the same video to both. The audience differs. Instagram skews slightly older (25-34) and more polished. TikTok rewards rawness and trend participation more aggressively.

One important technical detail: posting a TikTok video to Instagram with the TikTok watermark still visible will cause Instagram's algorithm to suppress its reach. Always save watermark-free versions for cross-posting.

**Example**

A small jewelry brand posts a 30-second Reel showing a gold ring being made — raw metal to finished product. It reaches 340,000 accounts despite the brand having only 8,000 followers. Three hundred people visit the shop link that week.

## **Why It Matters**

Reels are Instagram's highest-reach content format right now. The algorithm aggressively pushes Reels to non-followers through Explore and the Reels tab, giving small accounts a realistic shot at massive organic reach that's nearly impossible with static feed posts.
