# Reach

Reach is the number of unique people who saw your content at least once, counting each person a single time however often it appeared.

Reach measures how many individual people saw your content. Unlike impressions, which count every single display, reach only counts each person once — no matter how many times they scrolled past your post.

## Why Reach Matters More Than Impressions

Impressions can inflate your sense of performance. If one person sees your Instagram Reel six times, that's six impressions but only one reach. Reach gives you a cleaner picture of your actual audience size for any given piece of content.

This distinction is especially important for brand awareness. If you're trying to get your name in front of new people, reach is the number you care about. High impressions with flat reach means the same small group keeps seeing your stuff — you're not expanding.

## Organic vs. Paid Reach

**Organic reach** is people who see your content without you paying for distribution. This comes from followers, shares, hashtag discovery, and algorithmic recommendations.

**Paid reach** is people who see your content because you put money behind it through ads or boosted posts.

Organic reach has been declining on most platforms for years, especially Facebook. Average organic reach for a Facebook page post now sits in the low single digits as a percentage of total followers. Instagram organic reach varies significantly by content type and account size — Reels tend to reach further than static posts. Twitter/X and LinkedIn tend to have better organic reach, especially for text-based posts.

## How to Increase Reach

Reach is mostly controlled by algorithms, but you can influence it:

- **Post shareable content.** Every share exposes your post to an entirely new network of people. This is the fastest way to expand reach beyond your followers.
- **Use relevant hashtags.** On Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn, hashtags put your content in front of people who don't follow you.
- **Post consistently.** Platforms reward active accounts with better distribution. Posting regularly keeps your reach baseline healthy.
- **Engage with others.** Commenting on other people's posts, especially in your niche, puts your profile in front of new audiences.

## Tracking Reach Over Time

Single-post reach is useful but limited. The real insight comes from tracking average reach per post over weeks and months. If your average reach is climbing while your follower count stays flat, your content is improving. If reach drops while followers grow, something's off — likely content quality or a shift in the algorithm.

Most platforms provide reach data natively. Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn show it in their built-in analytics. Twitter/X shows it as part of tweet analytics. TikTok reports it per video.

**Example**

Your LinkedIn post gets seen by 3,200 different people over a week. That's your reach — even if some of those people saw it multiple times, each person only counts once.

## **Why It Matters**

Reach shows how far your content actually travels. Growing reach means you're breaking out of your existing audience and attracting new people. Declining reach — even with a growing follower count — means the algorithm is limiting your visibility.
