# Organic Reach

Organic reach is the number of unique people who see a post without any paid promotion behind it.

Every platform gives your content a certain amount of free visibility. That's organic reach — the number of unique people who see your post without any ad dollars behind it.

It sounds simple, but it's one of the most misunderstood metrics in social media. Your organic reach isn't just about how many followers you have. It's determined by algorithms that decide whether your content deserves to be shown to more people.

## Why Organic Reach Keeps Declining

If you've been posting on Facebook for years, you've watched this happen in real time. In the early 2010s, a Facebook Page's posts could reach a significant share of its followers. That figure has declined steadily over the years to low single digits. Instagram, Twitter/X, and LinkedIn have followed similar trends.

The reason is straightforward: there's more content than ever competing for limited attention. Platforms prioritize content that drives engagement because engaged users stay on the platform longer. If your posts don't generate quick interactions, the algorithm shows them to fewer people.

This isn't unique to Facebook. Reddit's algorithm surfaces upvoted content. TikTok's For You page rewards watch time. LinkedIn boosts posts with early comments. Every platform has its own version of the same gate.

## How to Improve It

You can't control the algorithm, but you can work with it:

- **Post when your audience is online.** Timing matters. A great post published at 3 AM when nobody's scrolling won't get the early engagement it needs to spread.
- **Front-load your hooks.** The first line of a caption, the first 3 seconds of a video, the title of a Reddit post — these determine whether someone stops or scrolls past.
- **Encourage conversation.** Posts that generate comments almost always reach more people than posts that only get likes. Ask questions. Share opinions. Be specific enough to provoke a response.
- **Match the format the platform wants.** Instagram pushes Reels. LinkedIn favors text posts with document carousels. TikTok rewards native video. Posting in the format the platform is currently promoting gives you a reach advantage.

## Organic vs. Paid

Organic reach builds your foundation. Paid reach amplifies it. The best accounts don't choose one or the other — they use organic content to find what resonates, then put ad spend behind the winners.

But if your organic reach is consistently near zero, throwing money at ads won't fix a content problem. Fix the content first. The reach will follow.

**Example**

You post a carousel on Instagram and it's shown to 4,200 people through the feed, Explore page, and hashtags — without you spending anything on ads. That 4,200 is your organic reach.

## **Why It Matters**

Organic reach is free distribution. The higher it is, the less you need to spend on ads to get your content seen. It's also a strong signal that the platform's algorithm considers your content worth spreading.
