# Lookalike Audience

A lookalike audience is an ad targeting audience built by a platform to match the characteristics of your existing customers or followers.

You know who your best customers are. Lookalike audiences let you find more people just like them — without manually defining every interest and demographic.

## How Platforms Build Them

You start with a "seed" audience. This can be a customer email list, website visitors tracked by a pixel, people who've engaged with your social content, or your existing followers. The platform's algorithm analyzes hundreds of signals about that group — age, location, interests, purchase behavior, browsing habits, device usage — and finds other users who share those patterns.

On Meta (Facebook and Instagram), you choose a percentage that controls how closely the lookalike matches your seed. A 1% lookalike in the US gives you roughly 2.4 million people who most closely resemble your source audience. A 5% lookalike is broader — more reach, less precision. Most advertisers start at 1% and expand from there.

TikTok and Pinterest offer similar functionality. LinkedIn calls theirs "Predictive Audiences" and builds them from contact lists, conversion data, or lead form submissions.

## What Makes a Good Seed Audience

Quality beats quantity. A list of 500 high-value customers who've purchased multiple times will produce a better lookalike than 10,000 email subscribers who never opened a message. The algorithm is only as good as the data you feed it.

The best seed audiences share a clear behavior: people who purchased in the last 90 days, people who spent above a certain amount, or people who completed a specific conversion event. Avoid mixing very different customer types in one seed — the algorithm won't know which pattern to replicate.

Most platforms need a minimum seed size. Meta requires at least 100 people from the same country. TikTok asks for at least 1,000. Larger seeds generally produce more stable results.

## Using Lookalikes Effectively

Pair lookalike audiences with compelling ad creative. These people don't know your brand yet, so your ads need to earn attention quickly. Lead with your strongest value proposition and clearest visuals.

**Layer additional targeting.** You can narrow a lookalike by adding age ranges, locations, or interest filters. This is useful if your product only serves a specific demographic within the broader match.

**Refresh your seeds regularly.** Customer behavior shifts over time. A lookalike built from last year's buyers may not reflect who's buying today. Update your source audience quarterly at minimum.

**Example**

You upload a list of 2,000 customers who've spent over $100 to Meta Ads Manager. Facebook analyzes their demographics, interests, and behaviors, then builds a lookalike audience of 1 million similar users for your next campaign.

## **Why It Matters**

Finding new customers who resemble your best existing ones takes the guesswork out of prospecting. Lookalike audiences consistently outperform interest-based targeting because they're built on real behavioral data, not assumptions.
