# Influencer Marketing

Influencer marketing is partnering with social media creators who have engaged audiences to promote your product or brand.

Brands pay creators to talk about their products. That's the core of it. But the execution ranges from a $50 gifted product to a micro-influencer to a $500,000 campaign with a celebrity — and everything in between.

## How It Actually Works

The typical process: a brand identifies creators whose audience matches their target customer. They reach out (or use an agency/platform), negotiate terms, and agree on deliverables. The creator makes content — a TikTok video, an Instagram Reel, a YouTube integration, a tweet thread — featuring the product. The brand pays a flat fee, a commission on sales, or both.

Compensation varies wildly. Nano-influencers (1K-10K followers) might accept free product. Micro-influencers (10K-100K) typically charge $200-$2,000 per post. Mid-tier creators (100K-500K) run $2,000-$10,000. Above that, expect five and six figures per deliverable.

## Why Smaller Creators Often Win

The instinct is to go big — get someone with millions of followers. But the data consistently shows that micro and mid-tier influencers deliver better engagement rates and lower cost per acquisition. Their audiences are more niche, more trusting, and more likely to act on recommendations.

A fitness creator with 30K highly engaged followers who posts about running will sell more running shoes than a lifestyle creator with 2M followers who covers everything. Relevance beats reach.

## What to Watch Out For

**Fake followers are still a problem.** Check engagement rates before partnering. An account with 200K followers but 50 likes per post is a red flag. Use tools that audit follower authenticity.

**Content control is a negotiation.** The best influencer content doesn't feel like an ad. Give creators a brief with key messages and required disclosures, then let them present it in their own voice. Over-scripted posts perform poorly because audiences can tell.

**Disclosure is legally required.** In the US, the FTC requires clear disclosure of paid partnerships. Instagram's "Paid Partnership" tag, TikTok's branded content toggle, and YouTube's paid promotion checkbox exist for this reason. Skipping disclosure risks fines and audience trust.

**Track results.** Give each creator a unique discount code or UTM link. Without attribution, you'll never know which partnerships actually drove revenue and which just generated vanity metrics.

**Example**

A skincare brand pays a TikTok creator with 150K followers $2,000 to make a 60-second video using their cleanser. The video gets 400K views, drives 1,200 website visits, and generates $8,500 in sales over two weeks.

## **Why It Matters**

People trust recommendations from creators they follow more than they trust brand ads. Influencer content feels authentic in a way traditional advertising can't replicate, and it often outperforms brand-created ads on cost per acquisition.
