# Hook

A hook is the opening line, image or sound designed to stop someone from scrolling past your post in the first one to three seconds.

Nobody reads your second sentence if your first one doesn't land.

That's the entire job of a hook — earn the next three seconds of attention. On social media, you're competing with everything: friends' photos, breaking news, memes, ads. Your opening line or visual is the only audition you get.

## What Makes a Hook Work

Strong hooks create a gap between what someone knows and what they want to know. That gap is uncomfortable, and the only way to close it is to keep reading or watching.

The most reliable hook types:

- **Curiosity gap.** "I tried posting at 3 AM for 30 days. Here's what happened." People can't not click.
- **Bold claim.** "Most social media advice is wrong." Challenges existing beliefs.
- **Specific number.** "This one change increased my engagement by 847%." Specificity signals real experience.
- **Relatable pain.** "Spending 4 hours on a post that gets 12 likes." Instant recognition.
- **Contradiction.** "The best time to post doesn't matter." Conflicts with common wisdom.

## Hooks by Platform

On **TikTok and Reels**, your hook is the first one to three seconds of video. The visual and audio need to be immediately arresting. Text overlays work well — viewers can read faster than you can speak.

On **Twitter/X and Threads**, the hook is your first line. It appears in feeds without being truncated, so make it count. Questions, surprising stats, and contrarian takes perform consistently well.

On **LinkedIn**, the hook needs to earn the "see more" click. The first two to three lines are visible before truncation. Front-load the most compelling idea.

On **Reddit**, your hook is the title. Posts with vague titles get ignored. Posts with specific, intriguing titles get clicked.

## Common Hook Mistakes

**Starting with a greeting.** "Hey everyone!" wastes your most valuable real estate.

**Being vague.** "I learned something interesting today" tells people nothing. Compare with "I analyzed 10,000 Instagram posts and found one pattern nobody talks about."

**Overpromising.** Clickbait hooks that don't deliver destroy trust. Your content needs to actually fulfill the promise your hook makes. One broken promise and people stop clicking.

Keep a swipe file of hooks that stopped you mid-scroll. When you're stuck, adapt one to your topic. The best hooks feel fresh but follow proven structures.

**Example**

A TikTok creator opens with 'I got fired for posting on social media — here's what happened next.' The video gets 2 million views because the hook creates an immediate curiosity gap. Compare that to starting with 'Hey guys, today I want to talk about social media' — that version gets skipped in under a second.

## **Why It Matters**

The hook determines whether anyone sees the rest of your content. On platforms where the average scroll speed is under two seconds per post, your opening is a gate. A strong hook earns attention. A weak hook wastes every word that comes after it.
