# Handle

A handle is the unique username, preceded by @, that identifies an account on a social platform, like @postpone or @jack.

Your handle is your identity on social media. It's the @username that people type to tag you, the text in your profile URL, and often the first thing someone sees when deciding whether to follow you.

## Choosing a Handle

Keep it short, memorable, and consistent. The ideal handle is your brand name — nothing more. @Nike, @Stripe, @Notion. No underscores, no numbers, no abbreviations if you can avoid them.

If your exact name is taken, here are common workarounds:

- Add a relevant word: @BrightCoffeeHQ, @BrightCoffeeApp
- Use a short modifier: @GetBright, @TryBrightCoffee
- Adjust formatting: @bright.coffee (Instagram allows periods)

Avoid random numbers (@BrightCoffee2847) — they look like spam accounts.

## Consistency Across Platforms

Claiming the same handle everywhere matters more than most people realize. When someone discovers your brand on Instagram and searches for you on TikTok, they'll try the same username first. If it doesn't match, some percentage of those potential followers will give up.

Register your handle on every major platform as soon as you launch, even if you're not active there yet. This also prevents impersonators or squatters from grabbing your name.

## Handles vs. Display Names

Your handle (@brightcoffee) and your display name ("Bright Coffee | Specialty Roaster") are different things. Handles are unique and mostly permanent — changing them can break existing mentions and links. Display names can be changed freely and appear above your posts.

On Reddit, handles work differently. Your username (u/BrightCoffee) is set at account creation and can never be changed. On Mastodon and Bluesky, handles include the server or domain: @ [bright@mastodon.social](mailto:bright@mastodon.social) or @bright.bsky.social.

## Handles in Marketing

When running campaigns, always include your handle in creative assets. Tell people exactly where to find you: "Follow us @BrightCoffee on Instagram." Don't assume people will search for your brand name — give them the exact handle so there's zero friction.

**Example**

Your brand is called Bright Coffee. You grab @BrightCoffee on Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn, but it's taken on Twitter/X. You settle for @BrightCoffeeCo there — and now you need to specify the right handle every time someone mentions you on that platform.

## **Why It Matters**

Your handle is how people find, tag, and mention you. A consistent handle across platforms builds recognition and makes it easy for your audience to follow you everywhere. Inconsistent handles create confusion and cost you discoverability.
