# Follower Growth Rate

Follower growth rate is the speed at which your account gains new followers over a specific time period, expressed as a percentage.

Follower growth rate measures how quickly your audience is expanding. Instead of looking at your total follower count (which only ever goes up for most accounts), growth rate shows you the velocity of that change — and whether it's accelerating or slowing down.

## The Formula

**Follower Growth Rate = ((New Followers in Period) / Followers at Start of Period) x 100**

If you had 10,000 followers on March 1st and gained 300 by March 31st, your monthly growth rate is 3%.

## Why Rate Matters More Than Count

An account that grows from 500 to 1,000 followers in a month (100% growth rate) is performing far better than one that grows from 100,000 to 101,000 (1% growth rate) — even though the second account gained twice as many followers in raw numbers.

Growth rate lets you compare performance across accounts of different sizes, across platforms, and across time periods. It's the metric that reveals whether your strategy is actually working.

## What's a Healthy Growth Rate?

This varies by platform and account size. General benchmarks:

- **Instagram**: 1-3% monthly for established accounts. New accounts can see 10%+ in early months.
- **TikTok**: Highly variable. The algorithm can drive rapid growth for accounts that hit a viral streak, but sustained rates depend heavily on content consistency.
- **LinkedIn**: 1-2% monthly for personal profiles, 0.5-1% for company pages.
- **Twitter/X**: 1-2% monthly is typical for active accounts.
- **YouTube**: Subscriber growth of 2-5% monthly is solid for channels under 100k.

Smaller accounts grow at higher percentage rates. That's mathematically normal — don't get discouraged when your rate slows as you get bigger.

## What Drives Growth

**Content quality** is the obvious one, but it's not the whole picture. Growth comes from discoverability. You need new people finding your profile and deciding to follow. That means:

- Posting content that gets shared beyond your existing audience
- Using hashtags, SEO, and platform-specific discovery features
- Collaborating with other creators in your niche
- Engaging in communities where your target audience hangs out

A spike in growth rate usually traces back to a specific event — a viral post, a feature by a larger account, or a new content format you tested. Track what caused spikes so you can repeat them.

## When Growth Rate Declines

Declining growth rate doesn't always mean you're doing something wrong. Larger accounts naturally grow at slower percentage rates. But if your growth flatlines or turns negative, check for these issues: stale content that your existing audience has outgrown, algorithm changes reducing your visibility, or increased competition in your niche pulling attention elsewhere.

**Example**

You start the month with 2,000 Instagram followers and end with 2,150. That's a 7.5% monthly growth rate — well above the 1-3% that most accounts average.

## **Why It Matters**

Raw follower count means nothing without context. Growth rate tells you whether your content strategy is working and whether you're gaining momentum or stalling. A consistent growth rate compounds — 5% monthly growth doubles your audience in about 14 months.
