# Flair (Reddit)

Flair is a colored tag on Reddit that labels a post by topic or identifies a user within a specific subreddit.

Reddit flair comes in two flavors: post flair and user flair. Both are specific to individual subreddits, meaning the same flair system works completely differently across every community.

## Post Flair

Post flair tags categorize content within a subreddit. Moderators define the available options — you pick one when submitting a post. In r/AskReddit, you might see "Serious" flair that changes the moderation rules for that thread. In r/gaming, flair separates screenshots from discussions from news.

Many subreddits require post flair. If you forget it, your post gets auto-removed by moderator bots. This is one of the most common reasons new Reddit marketers lose posts without realizing why.

Post flair also functions as a filter. Users can click a flair tag to see only posts with that label. This makes flair a discovery mechanism — your "Case Study" post in a marketing subreddit can be found by people specifically browsing for case studies.

## User Flair

User flair appears next to your username within a specific subreddit. It might show your expertise, location, or allegiance. In r/nfl, user flair displays your team logo. In r/startups, it might show your role (Founder, Investor, Developer).

Some subreddits assign user flair automatically based on participation. Others let you pick from preset options. A few allow fully custom text.

User flair builds credibility. When someone asking a tax question in r/tax sees your "CPA" flair, they're more likely to engage with your answer. For marketers, relevant user flair signals that you belong in the community — you're not just there to promote.

## Flair Strategy

Before posting in any subreddit, check the flair options. Read the rules to see if flair is mandatory. Look at top posts to see which flair categories get the most engagement. Some flairs consistently outperform others — "Discussion" posts often generate more comments than "Article" links, for instance.

**Example**

In r/personalfinance, every post requires flair like "Budgeting," "Investing," or "Debt." When you add the right flair, users filtering by topic can find your post directly — and moderators won't remove it for missing a required tag.

## **Why It Matters**

Flair helps your posts get seen by the right people in a subreddit. Many communities require it, and skipping it means your post gets auto-removed. Using flair strategically also helps you understand what content types perform best in each community.
