**Platform Concepts**

# Feed

A feed is the stream of content a user scrolls through when they open a social platform, either curated by an algorithm or shown chronologically.

Your feed is the main screen on any social platform — the endless scroll of posts, videos, and images that greets you when you open the app. It's where content lives or dies.

## Types of Feeds

Most platforms now offer multiple feed options:

- **Algorithmic feed** — the platform decides what you see, ranked by predicted engagement and relevance. This is the default on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn.
- **Chronological feed** — posts appear in order of when they were published. Twitter/X, Bluesky, and Mastodon offer this option. Some users prefer it; marketers often don't, because it limits discovery.
- **Discovery feed** — content from accounts you don't follow. TikTok's For You Page and Instagram's Explore are the biggest examples.

Reddit works differently. Your home feed shows posts from subreddits you've joined, ranked by Reddit's voting algorithm. The Popular and All feeds aggregate trending content across the entire site.

## Why Feed Position Matters

Being "in the feed" isn't enough. Position matters. Posts that appear in the first few scrolls get most of the engagement. Drop below that, and your content might as well not exist.

That's why early engagement is critical. When your post gets quick likes, comments, or shares right after publishing, the algorithm pushes it higher in more feeds. If nobody interacts in the first hour, it sinks.

## Feed vs. Other Surfaces

Feeds aren't the only way people see content anymore. Stories sit at the top of Instagram and Facebook. Reels have their own tab. YouTube has a home feed, Shorts feed, and subscription feed. Each surface has its own algorithm and audience behavior.

Smart content strategy means understanding all the surfaces your audience uses — not just the main feed. But for most platforms, the feed remains the primary battleground for organic reach. Master it first, then expand.

**Example**

When you open Instagram, the first thing you see is your home feed — a mix of posts from accounts you follow and suggested content the algorithm thinks you'll engage with. Your latest Reel might appear in 10,000 people's feeds even if only 500 follow you.

## **Why It Matters**

Feed placement determines whether people see your content at all. Understanding how feeds work on each platform — what gets prioritized, what gets buried — is the starting point for any content strategy.
