# Engagement Rate

Engagement rate is the percentage of people who saw a post and interacted with it through likes, comments, shares or clicks.

Engagement rate measures how actively your audience interacts with your content. It's the single most useful metric for understanding whether your posts actually resonate with people — not just whether they saw them.

## How It's Calculated

The basic formula is simple:

**Engagement Rate = (Total Engagements / Total Reach or Followers) x 100**

What counts as an "engagement" depends on the platform. On Instagram, it's likes, comments, shares, and saves. On Reddit, it's upvotes, comments, and awards. On Twitter/X, it's likes, retweets, replies, and clicks.

Most platforms report this for you, but the formulas vary. Some calculate it based on reach (people who actually saw the post), others based on follower count. Reach-based rates are more accurate but harder to compare across accounts.

## What's a Good Engagement Rate?

It depends entirely on the platform and your audience size. Rough benchmarks:

- **Instagram**: 1-3% is average, 3-6% is strong
- **Twitter/X**: 0.5-1% is typical
- **LinkedIn**: 2-4% is solid for company pages
- **Reddit**: Varies wildly by subreddit — a post with 50 comments on a 10k-member sub is excellent
- **TikTok**: 3-9% is common due to the algorithm favoring new creators

Smaller accounts almost always have higher engagement rates than large ones. That's normal — don't compare your 500-follower account to a brand with 2 million.

## Why Engagement Rate Beats Follower Count

A big following means nothing if nobody interacts with your content. An account with 1,000 engaged followers will outperform one with 100,000 passive ones. Algorithms on every major platform now prioritize engagement signals when deciding what to show. High engagement tells the algorithm your content is worth spreading.

**Example**

If your Instagram post reaches 1,000 people and gets 50 likes, 10 comments, and 5 shares, your engagement rate is 6.5%. That's well above average and signals strong content-audience fit.

## **Why It Matters**

Engagement rate is the clearest signal of content quality you have. High engagement means your audience finds your posts valuable enough to stop scrolling and react. It directly influences algorithmic reach — platforms show engaging content to more people, creating a compounding growth effect.
