# Employee Advocacy

Employee advocacy is when employees voluntarily share and promote their company's content, values or brand on their personal social media accounts.

Employee advocacy is when your team members share company-related content on their own social media profiles. It's not about forcing employees to repost corporate announcements — it's about creating an environment where people genuinely want to talk about their work, their company, and their industry.

## Why It Works

The numbers are stark. Industry research suggests content shared by employees receives significantly more engagement than content shared through brand channels. Employee networks also tend to have far more connections in aggregate than a company has followers.

The reason is algorithmic and psychological. Algorithms on every platform prioritize content from personal accounts over brand pages. And psychologically, a recommendation from a person you know (or feel you know) carries more weight than a corporate post.

For B2B companies especially, employee advocacy on LinkedIn is one of the highest-ROI social strategies available. When your engineers, salespeople, and executives share insights from their work, it builds credibility that no amount of brand content can match.

## Building a Program

**Make it voluntary.** Mandatory sharing backfires. Forced posts sound forced, and employees resent being treated as marketing channels. The goal is to make sharing easy and rewarding, not compulsory.

**Provide content, not scripts.** Give employees shareable content — blog posts, data points, behind-the-scenes updates, company news — and let them add their own perspective. A curated library of approved content with suggested (not required) copy works well.

**Remove barriers.** Many employees don't share because they don't know what's okay to post, they're worried about saying the wrong thing, or they simply forget. Clear social media guidelines, regular content suggestions, and light training solve most of these problems.

**Recognize participation.** Highlight employees who share great content. Some companies gamify advocacy with leaderboards or small rewards. Even simple recognition in team meetings goes a long way.

## What to Watch Out For

**Don't make it performative.** If 20 employees post the exact same copy on the same day, it looks coordinated and inauthentic — because it is. Encourage personalization.

**Respect boundaries.** Not everyone wants to mix their personal and professional social presence. That's fine. Advocacy programs should be opt-in with zero pressure.

**Provide guidelines, not restrictions.** Employees need to know what's confidential and what's fair game. Clear, simple social media guidelines protect both the company and the employee without stifling authentic sharing.

**Example**

A B2B software company encourages its 50 employees to share product updates and industry insights on LinkedIn. Their combined networks reach 150,000 people — 3x the company page's following — and the posts get 8x more engagement because they come from real people, not a brand account.

## **Why It Matters**

People trust people more than brands. Content shared by employees gets significantly more engagement and reach than the same content posted from a company account. Employee advocacy turns your team into a distributed marketing channel that feels authentic because it is.
