# Direct Message (DM)

A direct message, or DM, is a private message sent between users on a social platform, visible only to the sender and the recipient.

Public posts get the attention, but DMs are where real relationships happen. That's true for personal accounts and even more true for brands. A thoughtful DM reply can turn a frustrated customer into a loyal advocate faster than any marketing campaign.

Every major social platform has some form of direct messaging. Twitter/X has DMs. Instagram has its messaging tab. Facebook has Messenger. LinkedIn has InMail and regular messages. TikTok added messaging. [Reddit has both chat and traditional private messages](https://www.postpone.app/blog/reddit-chat-vs-direct-messages). Even Threads recently rolled out DMs. The feature set varies — some support images, voice notes, and group chats, while others keep things text-only — but the core function is the same: private, one-to-one communication.

## DMs as a Business Tool

For brands, DMs serve three critical functions. First, **customer support**. Many people prefer messaging a brand directly over filing a ticket or calling a phone number. It's faster and feels more personal. Second, **sales conversations**. On platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn, DMs are where purchasing decisions happen. A potential customer asks a question, you answer well, they buy. Third, **partnerships and outreach**. Influencer collaborations, press inquiries, and B2B deals often start in DMs.

The catch is volume. As your audience grows, so does your inbox. Managing DMs across seven platforms manually becomes unsustainable fast. Messages get missed, response times slip, and opportunities disappear.

## DM Etiquette

Cold DMs have a bad reputation for good reason. Unsolicited sales pitches, generic copy-paste outreach, and "hey, love your content" messages that immediately pivot to an ask — people see through all of it. If you're reaching out cold, be specific about why you're messaging that person and what's in it for them.

For incoming DMs, speed matters. A response within an hour signals that you're attentive and professional. A response after three days signals the opposite. Even if you can't fully resolve someone's question immediately, acknowledging the message quickly makes a noticeable difference in how people perceive your brand.

**Example**

A customer DMs your brand's Instagram account about a delayed order. Your team replies within 20 minutes with a tracking update and a discount code. The customer posts a Story praising your support — generating more goodwill than any ad could.

## **Why It Matters**

DMs are where relationships deepen beyond public interactions. They're where sales conversations start, customer issues get resolved, and partnerships form. Brands that respond to DMs quickly and personally build trust that public posts alone can't create.
