# Cost Per Click (CPC)

Cost per click, or CPC, is the amount you pay an advertising platform each time someone clicks on your social media ad.

Cost per click is exactly what it sounds like — the price you pay every time someone clicks your ad. It's one of the most fundamental metrics in paid social media and the easiest way to evaluate whether your ad spend is efficient.

## The Formula

**CPC = Total Ad Spend / Total Clicks**

Spend $1,000 on a LinkedIn campaign that gets 400 clicks, and your CPC is $2.50.

## Average CPC by Platform

Every platform has different costs based on competition, audience quality, and ad format:

- **Facebook**: $0.50-$1.00 average, but can drop below $0.20 with strong targeting
- **Instagram**: $0.70-$1.50 average, higher for competitive industries like fashion and fitness
- **LinkedIn**: $3.00-$8.00 average — expensive because the audience is high-intent professionals
- **Twitter/X**: $0.30-$0.80 average
- **TikTok**: $0.20-$1.00 average, generally cheaper due to less advertiser competition
- **Pinterest**: $0.10-$1.50 average, with e-commerce pins on the lower end
- **YouTube**: $0.10-$0.30 per view for TrueView ads (slightly different model)

These are approximate ranges and fluctuate over time. Your actual CPC depends on your industry, audience targeting, ad quality, and competition for the same audience.

## What Drives CPC Up or Down

**Ad quality matters most.** Platforms reward ads that get high engagement with lower costs. A Facebook ad with a 3% CTR will have a significantly lower CPC than one with a 0.5% CTR because Facebook wants to show content people actually click.

**Audience size and competition.** Targeting a narrow, high-value audience (like "CFOs at companies with 500+ employees" on LinkedIn) costs more because other advertisers want that same audience.

**Time of year.** CPC spikes during competitive periods — Q4 holiday season, Black Friday, back-to-school. You're bidding against every other brand trying to reach the same shoppers.

**Ad format.** Video ads often have lower CPCs than static image ads because they generate more engagement. Carousel ads on Facebook and Instagram tend to outperform single-image ads on CPC.

## CPC in Context

Low CPC isn't automatically good. If you're paying $0.10 per click but none of those clicks convert, you're wasting money efficiently. Always evaluate CPC alongside conversion rate and cost per acquisition.

The goal isn't the cheapest possible click — it's the cheapest click from someone likely to take the action you want. Sometimes paying $3.00 per click for highly qualified LinkedIn traffic generates better ROI than paying $0.15 per click for casual TikTok browsers.

**Example**

Your Facebook ad campaign spends $500 and generates 1,250 clicks to your landing page. That's a $0.40 CPC — below the Facebook average of $0.50-$1.00, meaning you're getting efficient traffic.

## **Why It Matters**

CPC directly determines how much traffic you can afford. A lower CPC means more clicks for the same budget. Tracking CPC helps you identify which ad creatives, audiences, and platforms deliver the cheapest qualified traffic.
