# Copywriting

Copywriting is writing short-form text designed to grab attention, build interest and drive a specific action from the reader.

Good social media copy doesn't sound like it was written by a committee. It sounds like a smart friend telling you something useful.

That's the challenge. Social media copywriting has to compete with vacation photos, memes, and breaking news — all in the same feed. You're not writing a billboard. You're writing for a thumb that moves at terrifying speed.

## What Makes Social Copy Different

Traditional copywriting lives on landing pages, ads, and emails where someone has already opted in. Social copy has to earn attention from zero. Nobody asked to see your post. It appeared in their feed, and you have about 1.5 seconds before they decide to keep scrolling.

This changes the rules. Sentences need to be short. The first line needs to punch. Every word earns its place or gets cut.

## Core Principles

**Lead with the benefit.** Don't tell people what something is. Tell them what it does for them. "Schedule posts in 30 seconds" beats "Our scheduling tool features an intuitive interface."

**Write like you talk.** Read your copy out loud. If it sounds like a press release, rewrite it. Contractions, fragments, and conversational rhythm all work in your favor.

**One idea per post.** Social media posts that try to cover three topics cover none of them well. Pick one point and make it stick.

**Cut the warm-up.** Delete your first sentence. Seriously. Most social copy buries the interesting part under a setup paragraph nobody needs. Start with the thing that makes someone stop scrolling.

## Platform Nuances

Twitter/X and Threads reward sharp, punchy writing. LinkedIn rewards structured posts with clear takeaways. Instagram captions can run longer if the hook pulls people in. Reddit values substance over style — try to sound clever there and the community will call you out.

TikTok captions matter less than the on-screen text in the first three seconds. Pinterest copy is keyword-driven because the platform functions more like a search engine than a social feed.

Match your copy length and style to where it lives. A caption that kills on LinkedIn might feel overwrought on Twitter.

**Example**

Apple's 'Shot on iPhone' campaign is three words. It communicates product quality, user empowerment, and social proof in a single phrase. On social media, the best copy often works the same way — the fewer words, the stronger the impact.

## **Why It Matters**

Great copywriting is the difference between a post that gets scrolled past and one that stops someone cold. In social media, you have about two seconds to earn attention. Strong copy earns those seconds. Weak copy wastes them.
