# Copypasta

Copypasta is a block of text that gets copied and pasted across the internet, usually as a joke, a meme or a parody.

Copypasta is text that spreads by being copied and pasted — again and again, across threads, platforms, and years. The name is a portmanteau of "copy" and "paste," and the format is older than most social media platforms.

Some copypastas start as genuine posts. Someone writes something so earnest, so intense, or so unintentionally funny that others start copying it verbatim as a joke. The Navy Seal copypasta began as an actual tough-guy rant. Now it's one of the most recognized text memes on the internet.

Others are written intentionally as parodies. Either way, what makes a copypasta stick is that it's instantly recognizable and endlessly reusable.

## Common Types

- **Rant copypastas** — over-the-top aggressive or emotional monologues pasted into unrelated contexts
- **Pasta templates** — fill-in-the-blank formats where you swap names or details
- **Wholesome copypastas** — saccharine or motivational texts pasted ironically
- **Platform-specific pastas** — some copypastas only circulate within certain communities, like Twitch chat or specific subreddits

Reddit is copypasta's spiritual home. The r/copypasta subreddit catalogs thousands of them, and pasting a relevant copypasta in a comment thread is a staple move. On Twitter/X and Threads, copypastas often get reformatted into tweet-length versions. Tumblr archives them like cultural artifacts.

## Why Copypasta Survives

Unlike image memes, copypasta requires zero design skills. You just paste it. That low barrier means copypastas spread faster and persist longer than visual memes. A meme image might get stale in a week. The Navy Seal copypasta has been circulating since 2012.

Copypasta also functions as an in-group signal. When you drop one in a thread, you're showing you know the culture. When someone doesn't recognize it and takes it seriously, the disconnect becomes its own entertainment.

For brand accounts: if your comment section fills with copypasta, don't panic. It usually means your post went viral enough to attract shitposters. That's not a crisis — it's reach.

**Example**

Someone posts the Navy Seal copypasta in response to a mild disagreement on Reddit. Everyone recognizes it immediately, and it gets upvoted precisely because it's absurdly disproportionate to the conversation.

## **Why It Matters**

Copypasta is one of the internet's oldest meme formats. Recognizing and deploying copypasta signals community fluency. For brands, understanding copypasta helps you read the room when your audience uses it in your mentions.
