# Conversion Rate

Conversion rate is the percentage of users who complete a desired action, like a purchase or signup, after clicking through from your content.

Conversion rate measures the percentage of people who take a specific action you want them to take. That action could be buying a product, signing up for a newsletter, downloading an app, or filling out a form. It's where social media performance meets actual business outcomes.

## The Formula

**Conversion Rate = (Conversions / Total Visitors or Clicks) x 100**

If your TikTok bio link drives 5,000 visitors to your landing page and 150 sign up for your free trial, your conversion rate is 3%.

## What Counts as a Conversion?

That depends entirely on your goal. Common social media conversions include:

- **E-commerce**: Purchase, add to cart
- **SaaS**: Free trial signup, demo request
- **Content/media**: Newsletter subscription, app download
- **Lead generation**: Form submission, phone call
- **Nonprofit**: Donation, petition signature

The key is defining your conversion before you start measuring. "Getting traffic" isn't a conversion. "Getting email signups from Reddit traffic" is.

## Benchmarks by Platform

Average conversion rates from social media traffic to websites sit between 1-3% across most industries. Some specifics:

- **Facebook ads**: Varies widely by campaign type — lead form campaigns can see 9%+, while e-commerce purchase conversions are typically lower. Paid traffic converts higher because it's targeted.
- **Instagram**: 1-3% for organic, higher for Shopping features
- **Pinterest**: 1.5-3% for product-related pins
- **LinkedIn**: 2-5% for B2B lead generation campaigns
- **Reddit**: Highly variable — relevant subreddit traffic can convert at 5%+ because the audience is self-selected

Paid social almost always converts higher than organic because you're targeting people based on specific behaviors and interests.

## Why Your Conversion Rate Is Low

Three common culprits:

**Audience mismatch.** Your social content attracts the wrong people. Going viral with a meme doesn't help if the audience doesn't match your buyer profile.

**Landing page friction.** People click through and land on a slow, confusing, or irrelevant page. The transition from social post to landing page should feel seamless.

**Asking too much too soon.** Someone who just discovered your brand through a tweet isn't ready to buy a $500 product. Match the conversion ask to where people are in their journey. Start with low-commitment conversions like email signups.

## Improving Conversion Rate

Focus on alignment. Your social content, your targeting, and your landing page all need to speak to the same person with the same message. Small changes — a clearer headline on your landing page, a stronger call-to-action in your post, better audience targeting — compound into significant conversion rate improvements over time.

**Example**

You run an Instagram campaign that drives 2,000 visitors to your product page. 60 people buy — that's a 3% conversion rate. For e-commerce from social media, that's solid.

## **Why It Matters**

Conversion rate connects social media activity to business results. You can have millions of impressions and thousands of clicks, but if nobody converts, you're not generating value. It's the metric that justifies your social media investment.
