# Contributor Quality Score (CQS)

Contributor Quality Score, or CQS, is Reddit's internal metric that measures how positively an account contributes to each subreddit it posts in.

Reddit's reputation system that most users don't know exists. While karma is the public-facing number, CQS works behind the scenes to determine how the platform treats your content. It's calculated per subreddit, meaning you can have a great score in one community and a terrible one in another.

## How CQS Works

[Reddit calculates CQS](https://www.postpone.app/blog/understanding-reddits-contributor-quality-score) based on your posting history within each subreddit. Upvoted posts and comments raise it. Downvoted content, removed posts, and moderator actions against your account lower it. The exact formula isn't public, but the inputs are clear: consistent positive contributions build your score over time.

The score exists on a spectrum from Low to Good. At the higher end, your posts get priority in feeds and bypass some automated filters. At the lower end, your content might be auto-removed, held in moderation queues, or simply never shown to anyone.

What makes CQS tricky is that it's invisible. Reddit doesn't show you your score. You won't get a notification saying "your CQS dropped in r/technology." The only way to notice is when your posts stop getting traction — or stop appearing at all.

## Why CQS Changed the Game

Before CQS, karma was the main gatekeeper. Spammers could farm karma in easy subreddits and use it everywhere. CQS made reputation subreddit-specific, meaning you have to earn trust in each community individually.

This hit marketers hard. The old playbook of building karma in meme subreddits and then pivoting to promotional posts in business communities doesn't work anymore. Each subreddit tracks your contributions separately.

For anyone serious about Reddit marketing, CQS means investing real time in every subreddit where you want to post. Share helpful comments. Answer questions. Post content that earns upvotes. There's no shortcut — the system is specifically designed to catch people who try to game it.

The accounts that thrive under CQS are the ones that were already doing Reddit right: participating genuinely, adding value, and treating each community like a place they actually want to be part of.

**Example**

An account with high CQS in r/marketing gets posts auto-approved and ranked higher in feeds. A low-CQS account might have every post silently filtered or held for moderator review — and you'd never know unless you checked in an incognito browser.

## **Why It Matters**

CQS directly controls whether your posts get seen. A low score means your content gets buried before anyone reads it. Building strong CQS through genuine participation is now essential for any Reddit marketing strategy.
