# Competitor Analysis

Competitor analysis is researching how competitors perform on social media to find gaps, opportunities and ideas for your own content.

Knowing what your competitors post is useful. Understanding why some of their content works and some doesn't — that's where the real advantage lives.

Competitor analysis on social media means systematically reviewing how other brands or creators in your space show up, what they post, how their audience responds, and where the gaps are. You're not doing this to copy them. You're doing it to make better decisions faster.

## What to Look At

Start with 3-5 direct competitors. Not aspirational brands with 10x your budget — actual competitors fighting for the same audience.

For each one, track:

- **Which platforms they're active on.** If every competitor in your space is on LinkedIn but none are on Reddit, that's either a warning sign or an opportunity. Figure out which.
- **Posting frequency and format.** Are they posting daily or weekly? Mostly video, carousels, or text? Understanding their content mix shows you what they're betting on.
- **Engagement patterns.** Raw follower counts mean little. Look at engagement rate, comment quality, and share counts. A competitor with 5,000 followers and 200 comments per post has a more engaged audience than one with 500,000 followers and 15 likes.
- **Content themes.** What topics do they cover repeatedly? What do they avoid? The topics they avoid might be your opportunity.
- **Audience response.** Read their comments. What do people praise? What do they complain about? This is free market research.

## Finding the Gaps

The most valuable part of competitor analysis isn't what competitors do well. It's what they miss.

Maybe nobody in your niche posts educational content on TikTok. Maybe every competitor on Reddit sticks to promotional posts while ignoring genuine community participation. Maybe they all use the same bland corporate tone on LinkedIn. These gaps are where you can differentiate.

## Keeping It Practical

Don't turn this into a full-time job. Spend an hour once a month reviewing competitor accounts. Save posts that performed unusually well or unusually poorly. Note any new formats or platform shifts.

Build a simple spreadsheet: competitor name, platform, content type, estimated engagement, and your takeaway. After a few months, patterns emerge that no single observation would reveal.

The goal isn't to obsess over what others are doing. It's to be informed enough to make your own content decisions with confidence instead of guessing.

**Example**

You notice a competitor posts Twitter threads every Tuesday that consistently get 500+ likes, while their Instagram Reels barely crack 20. You start creating weekly threads on similar topics with your own angle — and within a month, your Tuesday threads become your best-performing content.

## **Why It Matters**

Your competitors are running experiments you don't have to pay for. By studying what works and fails for them, you skip the trial-and-error phase and make smarter decisions about your own content and platform choices.
