# Brand Voice

Brand voice is the consistent personality, tone and language style a brand uses across all of its social media communications.

Strip the logo from your posts. Would anyone recognize them as yours? If not, your brand voice needs work.

Brand voice is the personality that comes through in everything you write. It's not just what you say — it's how you say it. Formal or casual? Funny or serious? Blunt or diplomatic? The best brand voices are instantly recognizable, even in a sea of similar content.

## Voice vs. Tone

Voice stays constant. Tone shifts with context. Think of it this way: your voice is your personality, your tone is your mood. A brand might have a playful, witty voice but adjust the tone to be more serious when addressing a service outage or a sensitive topic.

Wendy's voice is always sarcastic and bold. But their tone when responding to a customer complaint is different from their tone when roasting Burger King. Same voice, different emotional register.

## Building Your Brand Voice

Start by defining three to five adjectives that describe how you want to sound. "Friendly, knowledgeable, slightly irreverent." "Direct, data-driven, no-nonsense." "Warm, encouraging, practical."

Then create a voice chart with "do" and "don't" columns:

- **Do** use contractions → **Don't** write formally
- **Do** use humor in replies → **Don't** joke about serious topics
- **Do** use industry terms your audience knows → **Don't** use jargon that confuses people

Document this and share it with everyone who writes for your brand. Voice consistency falls apart when five different people manage your accounts with no shared guidelines.

## Adapting Voice Across Platforms

Your voice stays the same. Your vocabulary adapts. On LinkedIn, you might be "professionally direct." On TikTok, that same directness shows up as "straight talk with jump cuts." On Reddit, it means "honest and unhyped."

The biggest mistake brands make is trying to sound like a different entity on each platform. Your audience might follow you everywhere. If your Instagram sounds nothing like your Twitter, it creates cognitive dissonance.

Pick a core voice. Adapt the delivery for each platform's culture. Keep the personality consistent.

**Example**

Wendy's brand voice on Twitter/X is sarcastic, bold, and unfiltered — they roast competitors and reply to trolls with jokes. That voice helped them grow to over 3.8 million followers and made their account a case study in brand differentiation. It works because it's consistent and intentional, not random.

## **Why It Matters**

Your brand voice is how people recognize you without seeing your logo. In crowded feeds where dozens of brands post similar content, a distinctive voice is what makes someone stop, engage, and remember you. Inconsistency confuses your audience and erodes trust.
