# Brand Advocate

A brand advocate is someone who voluntarily promotes a brand to other people because they genuinely love the product or the experience.

Brand advocates aren't paid. They're not part of an affiliate program. They're not doing it for a discount code. They recommend your product because they genuinely believe in it — and that authenticity is exactly what makes them so powerful.

The difference between a brand advocate and an influencer is motive. An influencer promotes products because it's their business model. An advocate promotes yours because your product made their life better and they want others to know. That distinction is immediately obvious to anyone reading a Reddit thread, scrolling Twitter, or watching a TikTok review.

## What Makes Someone an Advocate

Brand advocates typically share three traits. They had an exceptional experience with your product — not just a good one, but one that exceeded expectations. They feel connected to your brand's values or mission beyond the transaction. And they're naturally inclined to share opinions and recommendations in their communities.

You'll find them answering questions about your product in subreddits, defending you in Twitter threads when someone complains, creating unsolicited tutorials on YouTube, and recommending you in Facebook Groups when someone asks for suggestions. They do your marketing without being asked, and they do it better than your team could because they're speaking as a customer, not a company.

## How to Create More Advocates

You can't manufacture advocacy, but you can create the conditions for it. Start with a genuinely great product — no amount of community strategy compensates for a mediocre experience. Then focus on moments that exceed expectations. A fast, personal support response. A handwritten note in a shipment. A feature request that actually gets built. These moments create the emotional connection that turns a satisfied customer into someone who actively promotes you.

Recognize your advocates publicly. Reshare their content. Respond to their posts. Feature them in your marketing with their permission. This recognition reinforces the behavior and signals to other customers that your brand values its community.

The trap to avoid: don't formalize advocacy to the point where it feels transactional. The moment you offer advocates a commission or require them to post a certain number of times per month, they become influencers — and lose the authenticity that made them valuable in the first place.

**Example**

A Notion user creates free templates, posts tutorials on TikTok, and recommends the app in every productivity thread on Reddit — without any sponsorship or affiliate deal. They drive more signups than most of Notion's paid campaigns because their enthusiasm is obviously real.

## **Why It Matters**

Brand advocates are your most cost-effective marketing channel. Their recommendations carry more weight than ads because they're unsolicited and authentic. One vocal advocate in the right community can influence hundreds of purchasing decisions over time.
