# Bio

A bio is the short text description on a social media profile that tells visitors who you are, what you do and why they should follow you.

Your bio is prime real estate. It's usually 150-160 characters on most platforms and needs to do a lot of work in very little space: explain who you are, signal your value, and give people a reason to follow or click.

## What a Good Bio Includes

Strong bios share a few traits:

- **Clear positioning** — what you do and for whom, stated plainly. "Email marketing for e-commerce brands" beats "Marketing enthusiast | Dreamer | Coffee lover."
- **Proof or specificity** — a credential, a number, or a result. "Helped 200+ brands grow on Instagram" is more compelling than "Social media expert."
- **A call to action** — tell people what to do next. "DM for collabs," "New video every Tuesday," or "Link below for free templates."

Skip the emoji walls, motivational quotes, and vague buzzwords. Every character should earn its place.

## Platform Differences

Each platform gives you different space and formatting options:

- **Instagram**: 150 characters. Supports line breaks and emoji. Your link sits separately below.
- **Twitter/X**: 160 characters. Plain text only, though links are clickable.
- **LinkedIn**: Up to 2,600 characters in the "About" section, plus a 220-character headline. Use the headline like a bio and the About for detail.
- **TikTok**: 80 characters. Extremely tight — every word counts.
- **Reddit**: Optional bio on your profile card. Less important than your posting history, which Redditors will check.

## Bio Optimization Tips

Update your bio regularly. If you're launching a product, promoting an event, or running a campaign, reflect that in your bio. It's not a set-and-forget field.

Use keywords your target audience would search for. Instagram and TikTok bios are searchable — "fitness coach NYC" or "vegan recipes" will surface your profile when people search those terms.

Test different CTAs. If you're sending people to a link, try "Grab the free guide ↓" vs. "Shop new arrivals ↓" and see which drives more clicks over a week.

**Example**

A freelance copywriter's Instagram bio reads: "Turning boring product descriptions into money. DM for rates." In 8 words, visitors know exactly what she does, who she serves, and how to hire her.

## **Why It Matters**

Your bio is the first thing people read when deciding whether to follow you. A strong bio converts profile visitors into followers. A vague or cluttered one sends them back to their feed. It's the most underrated piece of copy on your entire social presence.
