# Attribution

Attribution is the practice of identifying which marketing touchpoints and channels led someone to convert, sign up or make a purchase.

Attribution is the process of figuring out which marketing efforts actually led to a sale, signup, or other conversion. In social media, this means tracing the path a person took from first seeing your content to eventually taking action.

## Why Attribution Is Hard in Social Media

People don't discover your brand on Instagram and immediately buy. The typical journey touches multiple platforms and multiple pieces of content over days or weeks. Someone might:

1. See a TikTok video about your product
2. Google your brand name
3. Read a Reddit thread recommending you
4. Follow you on Instagram
5. Click a link in your newsletter
6. Buy from a retargeting ad on Facebook

Which touchpoint caused the sale? All of them contributed, but most analytics tools need to assign credit somewhere. That's the attribution problem.

## Attribution Models

Different models assign credit differently:

**Last-click attribution** gives 100% credit to the final touchpoint before conversion. Simple but misleading — it ignores everything that built awareness and trust.

**First-click attribution** gives 100% credit to the first touchpoint. Useful for understanding what drives discovery but ignores the nurturing process.

**Linear attribution** splits credit equally across every touchpoint. Fair but assumes each interaction had equal impact, which is rarely true.

**Time-decay attribution** gives more credit to touchpoints closer to the conversion. Reasonable assumption that recent interactions matter more than ones from three weeks ago.

**Data-driven attribution** uses machine learning to assign credit based on actual conversion patterns. Google Analytics 4 uses this by default. It's the most accurate but requires significant data volume to work well.

## UTM Parameters: The Foundation

UTM parameters are tags you add to URLs to track where traffic comes from. Without them, your analytics tool just shows "social" as a traffic source — not which platform, post, or campaign drove the click.

A properly tagged URL looks like: `yoursite.com/product?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=launch-post`

Tag every link you share on social media. Every single one. This is the bare minimum for any attribution effort.

## The Dark Social Problem

Much of social media sharing happens in places you can't track — DMs, private group chats, Slack channels, text messages. Someone copies your link and sends it to a friend. That friend visits your site, and analytics shows it as "direct traffic" with no attribution to social.

Studies estimate 70-80% of social sharing is dark social. This means your social media efforts are almost certainly driving more conversions than your analytics show.

## Practical Attribution for Most Teams

Perfect attribution doesn't exist. Don't chase it. Instead, use UTM parameters consistently, check Google Analytics for assisted conversions (touchpoints that helped but weren't the final click), and ask new customers how they found you. A simple "how did you hear about us?" field catches what analytics miss.

**Example**

A customer discovers your brand through a TikTok video, follows you on Instagram, clicks a link in your bio a week later, and buys from a retargeting ad on Facebook. Attribution determines which of those touchpoints gets credit for the sale.

## **Why It Matters**

Without attribution, you're guessing which channels drive revenue. You might cut a platform that's actually generating most of your sales or overspend on one that looks busy but doesn't convert. Attribution turns gut feelings into data-backed budget decisions.
