# Algorithm

An algorithm is the software that decides which content each user sees in their feed, based on signals like engagement, relevance and past behavior.

Every social media platform has an algorithm — a set of rules and machine learning models that decide what shows up in your feed and in what order. Purely chronological timelines are mostly gone. Platforms actively choose what you see.

## What Algorithms Prioritize

Each platform's algorithm weighs different signals, but the core inputs are remarkably similar:

- **Engagement signals** — likes, comments, shares, saves, watch time. Posts that generate early interaction get pushed to more people.
- **Relevance** — how closely the content matches your interests based on past behavior.
- **Recency** — newer posts generally get priority, though a high-performing older post can resurface.
- **Relationship** — content from accounts you interact with frequently ranks higher.
- **Content type** — platforms boost formats they want to promote. Instagram pushes Reels. LinkedIn favors text posts and carousels. TikTok is built entirely around short video.

## How This Affects Your Strategy

Algorithms reward consistency and engagement, not just posting. If you publish something and it gets zero interaction in the first 30-60 minutes, most platforms will limit its reach. That's why timing, hooks, and audience understanding matter so much.

Posting when your audience is active gives the algorithm those early signals it needs. Writing a strong opening line stops people from scrolling past. And creating content your specific audience cares about — not generic advice — drives the comments and shares algorithms love.

## Platform Differences

Reddit's algorithm is vote-based — upvotes push content up, downvotes bury it. TikTok's is behavior-based, analyzing watch time down to the second. YouTube blends watch time, click-through rate, and session duration. Twitter/X mixes chronological and algorithmic feeds, letting users toggle between them.

The biggest mistake is treating algorithms like enemies. They're distribution systems. Give them what they want — genuinely engaging content — and they'll work for you, not against you.

**Example**

You post a carousel on Instagram that gets 200 saves in the first hour. The algorithm reads that as a strong quality signal and starts pushing it to Explore pages, eventually reaching 50,000 people — 10x your follower count.

## **Why It Matters**

Every major platform uses algorithms to filter content. Understanding what signals they prioritize determines whether your posts reach 50 people or 50,000. It's the invisible gatekeeper between your content and your audience.
