# Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a revenue model where creators or publishers earn a commission for driving sales or leads through tracked referral links.

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based model where someone promotes a product and earns a commission when their promotion leads to a sale or other desired action. The tracking happens through unique referral links or discount codes assigned to each affiliate.

## How It Works

A brand creates an affiliate program and provides partners with unique tracking links. The affiliate shares those links in their content — blog posts, YouTube descriptions, Instagram bios, Reddit comments, email newsletters. When someone clicks the link and makes a purchase (usually within a set attribution window, like 24 hours or 30 days), the affiliate earns a percentage of the sale.

Commission rates vary widely. Amazon Associates pays 1-10% depending on the product category. Software and digital products often pay 20-50% because margins are higher. Some programs pay flat fees per signup rather than a percentage.

## Affiliate Marketing on Social Media

Social platforms are the primary distribution channel for most affiliates today. The format varies by platform:

- **YouTube**: Links in video descriptions, with in-video callouts
- **Instagram**: Link in bio, link stickers in Stories, or swipe-up links
- **TikTok**: Links in bio, TikTok Shop affiliate features
- **Pinterest**: Affiliate links directly in Pin URLs
- **Reddit**: Affiliate links in relevant discussions (though many subreddits ban them — always check rules)
- **Twitter/X**: Links in tweets or pinned posts

The most effective affiliate content doesn't feel like an ad. Genuine reviews, tutorials, comparison posts, and "what I actually use" content convert better than hard sells because they provide value first.

## Disclosure Requirements

Affiliate relationships must be disclosed. The FTC requires clear language like "This post contains affiliate links" or "I earn a commission if you purchase through my link." Most platforms also have their own disclosure rules. Skipping disclosure risks legal consequences and audience trust.

## For Brands

Running an affiliate program gives you an army of promoters who only get paid when they deliver results. The key is recruiting affiliates whose audience matches your target customer and providing them with the assets they need — product samples, high-quality images, talking points, and competitive commission rates.

**Example**

A tech reviewer on YouTube includes an Amazon affiliate link in the video description. Every time a viewer clicks the link and buys the recommended laptop, the creator earns a 4% commission — adding up to $2,000/month in passive income from a single popular review.

## **Why It Matters**

Affiliate marketing is one of the primary ways creators monetize their audience and one of the most cost-effective channels for brands. You only pay for actual results — sales, signups, or leads — which makes it lower risk than traditional advertising where you pay for impressions regardless of outcome.
