## **Social Media Automation FAQs**

How Automations Actually Behave

What sets an automation off, what it writes, and what happens on the day something breaks.

Still have questions? Check out our help center for answers to most of your questions, or reach out to our support team.

[**Visit the Help Center **](https://help.postpone.app/) [**Contact us **](https://www.postpone.app/contact)

### **Which platforms can automations post to?**

Seven: X/Twitter, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Threads, Mastodon, Facebook and Reddit. Six of those publish on their own; Reddit is the exception, where the automation builds and schedules the post and you publish it natively from the notification, because Postpone never automates Reddit. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest and Tumblr are not available for automations at the moment, and it is worth knowing that before you build a workflow around one of them.

There are two ways around it. The Zapier integration schedules to Instagram (Creator or Business accounts), TikTok and YouTube Shorts alongside the rest, and the GraphQL API reaches all twelve platforms.

[**Postpone on Zapier **](https://www.postpone.app/integrations/zapier)

### **What can trigger an automation?**

A new item in a feed you connect. That covers more than blogs: RSS and Atom, YouTube channels and playlists, podcasts by RSS or Apple Podcasts, Substack, Ghost, WordPress, Medium, Beehiiv, Buttondown, Dev.to, GitHub releases, a subreddit or Reddit user, a Tumblr blog, a Bluesky profile, and Mastodon profiles or hashtags.

Anything with a public feed is fair game — a changelog, a release page, a newsletter — so the trigger is usually something you already publish rather than something new to maintain.

[**Every supported feed source **](https://help.postpone.app/scheduling/automation/triggers)

### **Can I review an automated post before it goes out?**

Yes, an automated post can wait for your review. Each action picks one of three behaviours: draft the post for review, schedule it for later, or submit it immediately. Drafting is the cautious default while you are still tuning a template — the post lands in your Drafts list and nothing publishes until you say so.

A scheduled action takes a plain-language expression like "Tomorrow 9am", "Monday at noon" or "+2h", read relative to the moment the automation fires. So a Wednesday afternoon blog post set to "Tomorrow 9am" goes out Thursday at 9.

[**The three action types **](https://help.postpone.app/scheduling/automation/actions)

### **How does an automation know what to write?**

You write a template once and Postpone fills in the details from each new feed item. Five variables are available — the item title, its link, a summary, its full content where the feed provides it, and the author — and you insert them with a picker rather than typing them from memory.

The action editor previews the result against the most recent item in your feed, so you can see the actual post before you save the automation rather than finding out on the first run.

[**Template variables explained **](https://help.postpone.app/scheduling/automation/template-variables)

### **Can one automation post different content to each platform?**

That is what multiple actions are for. Each action targets one social account and carries its own template, written in the same editor as a normal post — so the Reddit action gets a title, a subreddit and flair, the X action gets thread items, and the LinkedIn action gets its own copy. One blog post can draft on Reddit, schedule on LinkedIn and publish to Bluesky in the same run.

### **Why is my automation not triggering?**

Usually one of four things. Feeds are polled rather than pushed, so there is a delay between publishing and detection. The feed has to be Active — a paused or erroring feed will not fire anything connected to it. The automation itself has to be enabled. And feeds only trigger on new items, so anything already in the feed when you created the automation will not produce a run.

A warning banner appears on the Automations page whenever one of your feeds is paused or erroring, which is the first place to look.

[**Automation troubleshooting **](https://help.postpone.app/scheduling/automation/troubleshooting)

### **What happens when an automated post fails?**

It is recorded, not silently dropped. Every run is logged with its date, the feed item that triggered it and an overall status, and each action inside the run carries its own result — succeeded, failed or skipped — with the error message behind it.

The most common cause is an expired or revoked social account token, which is fixed by reconnecting the account. Platform restrictions and content that a platform rejects are the other two. A failed post does not count against your monthly post limit.
